Sublime Studio began as the passion project of award winning NZ musician/bassist Steve Harrop and his wife and artist Fenella Barry. Over the past 5 years we have redesigned and transformed the 1927 woolshed on our property into a unique recording space that offers a relaxing creative environment for any musician to work. The remote location overlooking the beautiful Waitaki Valley in North Otago is both a meditative and inspiring place to compose, play and record while relaxing in our boutique accommodation and dining on delicious food.
The studio space and mixing room has evolved with the input of many local and visiting artists, designers, builders, technicians, and musicians. The result is a great sounding acoustic space with an authentic collection of analogue equipment from the past 50 years interfaced with the latest digital recording technology. Steve has travelled and played music all over the world and spent decades collecting the very best equipment the analogue world has to offer. The centre piece is a Soundcraft 2400 mixing console that has been carefully refurbished. This iconic British desk spent its working life tracking many bands and artists in Dublin's Sonic and Windmill Lane Studios throughout the 1980’s and early 1990’s before being retired. As well as tracking through this great sounding board we offer Steve’s collection of vintage and classic contemporary microphones - a respectable collection of acoustic and electric guitars and basses with diverse classic valve amplification – vintage studio drums and keyboards - extensive outboard gear and crystalline monitoring.
Having this equipment assembled in one place along with the knowledge of our in house engineer Tom and technician Max combines to make a relaxing and unique environment in which to record - a place where you can stay and creativity is cultivated, unimpeded by distractions.
